Philip Rushton studied physics at Durham University. He obtained an MSci in theoretical physics in 1999 with a dissertation on quantum chaos in semiconductor structures. He also earned a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics in 2002, developing improved exchange-correlation functionals in density functional theory (DFT). Between 2002 and 2005, Philip worked as a technical consultant for Detica (now BAE systems digital intelligence). In 2007, Philip broadened his intellectual horizon with a BA in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.
Whilst studying in Rome, Philip encountered the problem of life for the first time, and has devoted himself to understanding this problem ever since. Philip has spent twenty years developing a new, powerful answer to the problem of life by considering communication independent of space, time and matter. Philip set out his solution to life in a preprint entitled, Towards a universal theory of life: The Non-Physical Communication Architecture, which he uploaded to Zenodo on 31st December 2025, amid New Year's Eve celebrations (the fireworks were not for Philip's paper). Philip currently lives in his hometown of Liverpool.
