Philip Rushton studied physics at Durham University. He obtained an MSci in theoretical physics in 1999 with a dissertation on quantum chaos in semiconductor structures. He also earned a PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics in 2002, developing exchange-correlation functionals in density functional theory (DFT). Between 2002 and 2005, Philip worked as a technical consultant for Detica (now BAE systems digital intelligence), and in 2007 he broadened his intellectual horizon by earning a BA in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.
Whilst studying in Rome, Philip encountered the problem of life for the first time, and has devoted himself to this problem ever since as an independent reseatcher. Philip has spent twenty years developing a new, powerful answer to life called the Non-Physical Communication Architecture or NPCA. On 31st December 2025, Philip published a preprint of his foundational paper on the NPCA. His main research aim is now to use the NPCA theory to explain the origin of life, which he estimates will be achieved by the year 2031. Philip was born in Liverpool, where he currently lives.
